Destination Management Organization

What is important to us in the context of the destination "Jewish Austria"?

Without Jewish cultural heritage in Austria, Austria would not be the country we know today. We combine Austrian cultural heritage and Jewish heritage, which is now collectively referred to as world heritage. We particularly focus on the content of our services and tours to provide our stakeholders, especially our guests, with the best and most authentic Jewish-Austrian experiences possible.

What is Jewish cultural heritage?

In Austria, Jewish cultural heritage is considered an integral part of world, Austrian, and often Viennese heritage. This is a result of the complexity of Judaism, which influenced not only Austrian, European, and world history but also shaped Austrian culture. In the 21st century, this reflects the general complexity of people’s multiple identities and the multidimensional nature of Judaism. We emphasize the importance of not reducing Jewish history solely to the Holocaust but recognizing its diverse contributions to Austrian culture and contemporary heritage.

What constitutes Jewish cultural heritage?

“By Jewish cultural heritage, we mean all places, objects, history, historical documents, as well as active or former living spaces of Jews, which were an integral part of Austrian, European, and world history on one hand, and, on the other hand, were or are integral within Jewish history itself, such as in Vienna…” (Blumenfeld 2023)

Jewish Austria as a destination?

Jewish Austria is classifiable as a destination according to the definition, as there is spatial separation and consideration of individual guest needs (cultural interest, simplicity, accessibility, availability, etc.). (Zirelman, 2023)

What do we stand for?

There will always be Jewish cultural heritage in Austria; the question is visibility. And that’s exactly what makes the destination and its attractiveness unique: the more visible it becomes, the stronger the attraction and identification with the destination. We work sustainably to ensure that the destination “Jewish Austria” is globally represented, known, and marketed. Our approach is the dialogue between people and the interaction between past, present, and future.
